"so we must die"

"Like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be recovered, so we must die."
2 Samuel 14:14

Not a very familiar passage, nor a very comforting quote. "Like water spilled...so we must die." Not a very comforting revelation at all. In fact, it is very grim. Our fate, revealed and sealed in but four words; "so we must die".
But, isn't that the truth of the matter? From the beginning, GOD warned man - sin would bring about that which until then was not - death. And so sin delivered. When sin entered the world, death was it's byproduct. Not only physical, but spiritual. Nor was it limited to man, but all of creation. After all, did not GOD use animal skins to cover Adam & Eve who (after sin) felt shame at their nakedness? A life was required to cover them in order that they not feel shame. That life was but a shadow of what was ultimately necessary, a life required to not only cover, but remove the guilt that sin brought about.

So back to our passage. "Like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be recovered, so we must die." Our fate is sealed. Death with all it's finality is our expectation - except- that is not the conclusion of the passage. Let's look at it in it's entirety:
"Like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be recovered, so we must die. But God does not take away life; instead, he devises ways so that a banished person may not remain estranged from him."

Did you catch that? "GOD, does not take away life; instead, he devises ways so that a banished person may not remain estranged from him."

What then may we conclude, except that GOD, in His sincere and eternal love for mankind, has placed in motion a plan whereby we may (though we have sinned and are worthy of death) be reunited to Him. That plan, placed in motion before our creation, was Jesus Christ. For it was His death, His willingness to pay the debt brought about by sin, my sin, that allows we who were estranged to be brought back in relation with GOD. New creatures. New creation. Justified in His sight, dwelling in His presence.

The truth is this passage reveals our hope - the love of GOD. So let not this passage cause you discomfort, but rather elation, for we have a GOD who loves us and desires to bring us into His presence.

All praise be to the GOD of creation and His great love for us, Grace & Jesus Christ.

"Grace to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with an undying love."

Blessings to you In Christ Jesus my Lord.
